BENEFITS ELIGIBILITY AND ENROLLMENT
Eligibility for Benefits
The following employees of the University are eligible to enroll in Benefits:
- Faculty members who have an appointment for nine (9) months or longer at 50% FTE (full-time equivalent) or greater.
- Staff employees who are employed in a position expected to last nine (9) months or longer at 50% FTE or greater.
- Employees who have qualified under one of the first two categories and are currently on an approved Phased Retirement Agreement.
Eligibility for some benefits is determined the employee’s position and FTE. For example:
- Tuition Reduction and some paid leaves are only available to employees employed at 75% FTE or greater.
- The Health Care Plan contribution rate for part-time employees (50% - 74% FTE) is higher than the rate for full-time employees (75% FTE or greater).

Benefits Enrollment Periods
New Hires:
- Initial Enrollment Period is 3 months from date of hire or transfer to benefit-eligible position.
- Learn about benefits and obtain enrollment forms through online New Employee Orientation.
- Employees who do not submit completed enrollment forms within their Initial Enrollment Period must wait for the next Open Enrollment to enroll in some benefits and must submit proof of good health to enroll in other benefits.
Open Enrollment:
- Annual Open Enrollment is during the month of April.
- The Plan Year is July 1 – June 30.
- Changes and enrollments made during Open Enrollment are effective on the following July 1.
- During Open Enrollment, employees may enroll or change their enrollment in the Health Care Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, and the Group Legal Plan.
Status Change Events:
If an employee experiences a Status Change Event (such as marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, or loss of other health coverage), the employee may be able to enroll, cancel enrollment or make changes to enrollment in the Health Care Plan, Flexible Spending Account Plan or Spouse Supplemental Life Insurance.
